I just found a cool site called grammarly.com that does automated checks of grammar. Wow!

Having run a large technical writing shop years ago, I know what it takes for a substantive edit. The skill level of the editor is important, which impacts their labor rate. Also the time it takes to conduct a manual substantive edit is longer than many people think. This makes the costs high. As a content developer, I also have difficulty seeing my own errors. Generally it is best not to have the writer try to edit their own work.

Because software development has automated testing of work items under development before they are “done”, it would be really nice to have automated testing of English language usage with something like grammarly.com.

I’ll be watching them. When they can get their prices a bit lower for personal use, I’ll try it. For business use, I will have to consider the costs and the quality impact. What a great concept.
